Starting out on piano at the age of 8, O'Dell made his compositional debut as a freshman in high school. He later enrolled in Clarke University in 2011 studying Music Composition under the instruction of Dr. Amy Dunker as well as piano with Nancy Lease and Dr. Sharon Jensen. O'Dell is also an active student teacher, piano and percussion instructor, accompanist to the "Cantible" Women's Chorus, and conductor for the chamber choir, "Schola."

O'Dell is a published academic writer, and has given numerous guest lectures, presentations, and masterclasses in composition across the United States. He is currently Composer-in-Residence with Stamp Brothers Productions in New York City, and is a licensed PARMA Recordings composer.
