PARMA Music Festival Performer Spotlight: Juan Álamo

Today's performer spotlight is on Dr. Juan Álamo, a composer with as much to say with his pencil as with his mallets. A marimba player since the age of 16, Dr. Álamo holds the distinction of becoming the first Puerto Rican to earn a Doctorate Degree in percussion.

Dr. Álamo will be trekking up to Portsmouth, NH from North Carolina, where he serves as Associate Professor and Director of the Percussion Ensemble at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

No stranger to the stage, Dr. Álamo has performed with a who's who of music's modern giants, including Arturo Sandoval, Tito Puente, and Keiko Abe. His playing has been featured on radio, stage, and screen throughout North and South America.

Dr. Álamo will be performing as part of the PARMA Artists Concert at the North Church of Portsmouth at 10 AM on Wednesday, August 13. For a sample of his new album MARIMJAZZIA, check out the Big Round Records release page or the player below.
